Pittsburgh Executive Director
Strong Women, Strong Girls (SWSG), Inc. is seeking an Executive Director to manage and lead SWSG’s Pittsburgh office. This dynamic Executive Director will lead SWSG Pittsburgh to its next stage of growth and impact.
Founded in 2000, Strong Women, Strong Girls is a nationally recognized mentoring program that empowers girls to imagine a broader future through a curriculum grounded in female role models delivered by college women mentors, who are themselves mentored by professional women. Strong Women, Strong Girls strives to support positive mentoring relationships between college women and pre-adolescent girls in underserved local communities. Our vision is that every girl will realize her inner strengths to dream and do. More than 640 girls,180 mentors, six college partners, and 40 sites currently participate in SWSG in Pittsburgh alone.
Reporting to the Regional Board Chair, the successful candidate will be an inspirational, proactive, collaborative and accomplished leader. Specifically, s/he will be responsible for ensuring the continued success of SWSG Pittsburgh; increasing philanthropic support and building external visibility with new funders while maintaining strong relationships with existing funders, local leaders, and other key constituents. S/he will be an innovative and strategic thinker who will nurture current partnerships while identifying and forging new collaborations as SWSG embarks on its ambitious goals to broaden its impact.
The Pittsburgh Executive Director must possess a deep understanding of and commitment to the needs of women and girls in the Pittsburgh community, as well as the ability to build partnerships across sectors.
RESPONSIBILITIES, OPPORTUNITIES, AND CHALLENGES FOR THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
The Pittsburgh Executive Director will build upon the successes of the past several years in Pittsburgh while visualizing and shepherding opportunities for continued growth and improvement. Primary to the Pittsburgh Executive Director’s success will be managing the following challenges, opportunities, and responsibilities:
Fundraising and Partnership Development
Responsible for a fundraising target of $500,000 per year (with support from the Regional Board).
Work collaboratively with the Regional Board of Directors to raise funds to meet the annual budget by securing existing relationships and expanding opportunities for diversified income streams and structures. Write grants to support new and existing programs. Support existing fundraising activities and build relationships to develop new ones. Actively engage with the Regional Board of Directors to provide on-going support and engagement in the areas of community partnerships and resource development. Conceptualize and develop special events in line with SWSG mission. Encourage, foster and maintain relationships with SWSG partners, collaborators, volunteers, staff, donors, community organizations and program participants.
Finance and Operations Management
Possess a level of financial knowledge that allows funders and partners to feel comfortable that their investments are being deployed in a cost-effective and results-driven manner. S/he must maintain official records for SWSG Inc., coordinate financial reporting with other SWSG Inc. locations and ensure compliance with federal, state, and local nonprofit regulations.
Marketing and Public Relations
Represent SWSG Pittsburgh and SWSG Inc. and promote its mission at the local and regional level. Develop opportunities to promote the identity and profile of Strong Women, Strong Girls and build stronger public relations networks with local and regional media. Work with the Communications committee in coordination with Boston to ensure SWSG messaging is consistent and within SWSG Inc. guidelines. Identify and implement communications tools and strategies locally. Maintain a working knowledge of significant developments and trends in the field and become known as a sought-after resource for the women and girls serving field.
Provide leadership in developing tactics appropriate for the local market to ensure achievement of the strategic plan and long-term goals necessary to position SWSG Pittsburgh with a high stature among funders and partners. S/he will work actively with the Executive Board and Regional Board of Directors to ensure critical financial resources are in place to support the vision and strategy and to continue to generate imaginative and original solutions. The Pittsburgh Executive Director will be expected to support and foster a culture that embraces teamwork, transparency, seamless communication and high levels of morale.
Program Planning and Management
Provide oversight for the planning, implementation and evaluation of the organization's programs and services. Monitor the day-to-day delivery of the programs and services of the organization to maintain or improve quality.
Human Resource & Risk Planning & Management
Serve as a coach, supervise and mentor staff as appropriate to improve performance. Conduct a bi-annual performance management process for staff. Identify and evaluate risks to the organization's human resources (participants, staff, volunteers, finances, image) and implement measures to control risks.
QUALIFICATIONS OF THE IDEAL CANDIDATE
The Pittsburgh Executive Director will be a strategic and dedicated champion of SWSG Pittsburgh. S/he will be a results-driven leader with demonstrated competence for guiding and managing a nonprofit, business or program of similar size, complexity, and trajectory. Energetic and enterprising, successful candidates will demonstrate deeply held respect and understanding of the power of education and mentoring, even if his/her primary professional background is in another field.
